For a look at the open ocean, head out of town to rural Katama, home of South Beach (Katama Beach), and Norton Point Beach. South Beach is a very popular beach with soft sand and southern views of the open ocean.
Waves can become quite large on the south shore, and there is often a strong undertow. Lifeguards are on duty in season at South Beach, however it can be a dangerous place for inexperienced swimmers at times because of its waves, so children should be watched very carefully when near the shore.
