This is the fabric of Edgartown - its history is steeped into every step you take in town. From the last names of the locals you meet in town to the Greek Revival architecture you look up to, it's a town that once started as a colony. In 1642, Rev. Thomas Mayhew, Jr. led a few families to start a colony on the island his father, Thomas Mayhew, had purchased. At first, it was named Great Harbor, but by 1671 it had been incorporated as Edgar Town. Along with Tisbury, it was one of two of the original towns on the island.

Similar to Thomas Mayhew, Jr., when you're planning a trip to Edgartown, you'll most likely arrive on island via a ship, but in today's day and age, it will be a motor vessel, not a wooden ship.

Edgartown is known for its gorgeous downtown, sprinkled with locally owned shops, restaurants, and more - but there's much more to this New England town. Within Edgartown, you'll also find the area of Katama, as well as the adjacent island of Chappaquiddick, two great destinations while in town.

### Katama

Katama is an extension of the residential area of Edgartown, located on the south shore of the island. On the east, it borders Katama Bay and on the west, it borders Edgartown Great Pond. You'll know you've reached Katama when you see the fork in the road when heading south on Katama Road out of Edgartown. It's known for its grand, vast terrain with waterways, hence the word "Katama", meaning "crab-fishing place" in Wampanoag. Very few trees grace Katama, giving it it's colloquial name of "Great Plains".

Located in the Katama area, you can find one of the largest resorts on the island, the Winnetu Hotel, a great spot for traveling families. Delight at the Katama Airpark as you watch the biplanes take off, do cartwheels in the air, and safely land on the airstrip. Because of its vast land, Katama is also home to island farms such as [Slough Farm](https://www.sloughfarm.org) and the [Farm Institute](https://thetrustees.org/place/farm-institute-the/), both organizations that work tirelessly in the agricultural island community. ### Chappaquiddick

Making your way to Chappaquiddick is another area that must be on your checklist of the island. Known to the locals as "Chappy", it is a small peninsula but more occasionally it is an island of the eastern part of Martha's Vineyard. We say more occasionally, because it only is a peninsula when Norton Point, a narrow barrier beach, connects Martha's Vineyard and Chappy, but when it's not, it's a tiny island of its own.

## Getting to Edgartown ~ Getting There

Arriving to Edgartown is simple, once you understand how to arrive to Martha's Vineyard. There are two options to choose from: plane or ferry, and each one has its pros and cons. But first, let's review these options in general.

New visitors to the island might not be aware that there is no bridge that connects the island to the mainland, so realizing this is the first order of business. Because of the lack of bridge connection, you'll have to either take a plane or ferry to the island.

If you're coming via air, note that you obviously will have to consider renting a car while on Martha's Vineyard (although you technically do not need a car on island, but we will get into that later on).

If you take the Steamship Authority vessels, you can easily walk-on as a passenger or bring your car onto the boat and on the island. Both options are great, it all just depends on what you'll need while on Martha's Vineyard.

### Arriving via Plane

Because the island is a year-round destination, there are daily flights available. [Cape Air](http://capeair.com/) offers daily, year-round flights from Boston and other major cities, plus additional seasonal service from New Bedford, Hyannis, and Nantucket in Massachusetts, as well as New York locations. Another option for flying into the Vineyard year-round are private air charters. If you're visiting the island between May and October, you can also check the following airlines:

- **[JetBlue](https://www.jetblue.com) provides seasonal flights** from Boston Logan Airport and New York JFK Airport
- **[Delta](http://delta.com) provides seasonal service** from New York's LaGuardia Airport
- **[American Airlines](http://aa.com) provides air travel seasonally** from Washington, DC

Traveling by plane is the fastest way to get to Martha's Vineyard, and you'll be flying into MVY Airport, a public airport located in the middle of the island about 15-20 minutes from the center of Edgartown.

Travelers should remember that traveling by plane reduces the amount of luggage that you will be bringing on island compared to if you were traveling by ferry and bringing your car. Once you arrive at the airport, you will need to take a taxi, Uber, or private car to your destination in Edgartown. Some hotels offer airport pickup services, so make sure to contact your hotel and ask if they provide this service.

### Arriving via Ferry

Traveling by ferry is what most visitors to the island decide as their mode of transportation, because it is definitely more economical than flights, and allows for more leeway in terms of what you are bringing on the island.

For passengers considering bringing their car on the island, note that the only car ferry is the [Steamship Authority](http://steamshipauthority.com/) vessels departing from Woods Hole, MA. **[These are the only ferries](https://www.marthasvisit.com/ferries) that are capable of bringing your car to Martha's Vineyard**, so when booking ferries, be mindful of this. Ferry reservations for busy weekends such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day, get filled up quickly, but travelers have good luck when putting themselves on the ferry waitlist.

If you're traveling in less busy times, you should still book your ferry in advance of arriving in Woods Hole, as to assure your travel accommodations. Bringing your car on island allows you to transport any essentials such as strollers and similar large items, plus you will have a mode of transportation to get around the island.

**If you are not bringing your car, you do not need to purchase tickets in advance**, because as a walk-on passenger, you will most likely get on the ferry you would like to get on. Once you arrive in Woods Hole, you can easily purchase tickets to ride the ferry over.

In the height of summer, parking is extremely difficult to find in downtown Edgartown, thus we recommend having a plan. Parking in downtown Edgartown can be found along the left side of Main Street, as well as down side streets. There are a few parking lots in town, such as the Edgartown Harbor Parking Lot and the adjacent parking lot.

### Public Transit

If you're looking to leave your car behind, you can easily get into town with the public bus system, the Vineyard Transit Authority. You can purchase a ride pass or full day pass right on the bus, making it easy to get around - just make sure you have exact change for the bus fare, as they do not make change.

Oak Bluffs, or “OB” as the locals call it, is one of Martha's Vineyard's busiest and most bustling towns. If you're considering a summer vacation to Oak Bluffs **mark your calendars for the Grand Illumination, or Illumination Night** generally held on the third Wednesday of August. Illumination Night is a time-honored tradition where all of the houses of the campground are adorned with paper lanterns and are set aglow.

Oak Bluffs' history is also immersed in African American history, as the town has long been a safe haven and summer colony for the black community. Visitors can take the African-American Heritage Trail Walking Tour which is made up of 30 sites where descriptive plaques have been placed in dedication of the formerly unrecognized contributions made by people of African descent to the history of the island.

Another long-standing and culturally significant landmark in Oak Bluffs is the East Chop Lighthouse which sits atop a large bluff in Oak Bluff on a peninsula known as East Chop. A popular spot to enjoy is Oak Bluffs Town Beach, a sandy beach with generally calm water that is a destination for families. There are staircases down to the beach along the seawall with handicap access at the end of the beach away from the ferry terminal. With access to town facilities, local restaurants, shopping, and parking along the road and throughout town, this is a great place to visit if you don't have much time on the island. The famous Inkwell Beach is also part of Oak Bluffs Town Beach. Since the 1800s Inkwell Beach has long been a popular destination and summertime sanctuary for black families and it is beloved by many. It is a small stretch of beach that has been visited generationally and is a hub of culture and activity in the summer months.

### State Beach

A few miles further down beach road you will find Joseph Sylvia State Beach, or simply State Beach. This beach is a two-mile-long barrier beach that runs alongside Beach Road, and protects Sengekontacket pond. This beach straddles Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, while the Edgartown side is called Bend in the Road Beach.

### The Jaws Bridge at State Beach

The Bridge that separates the Oak Bluffs and Edgartown sides of this beach is known to many as “Jaws Bridge,” after its memorable moment in the 1975 classic film “Jaws.” Though there are signs that warn you not to, many people take the plunge and jump from the bridge into the fast moving water flowing in or out of Sengekontacket Pond. It's a rite of passage for many and an exciting time for all that take the plunge.

## Shopping in Oak Bluffs ~ Shopping

Many perfect summer days in Oak Bluffs start with the beach, followed by a stroll along Circuit Avenue, shopping the main street's many retail shops. It's the go-to place for your iconic Martha's Vineyard T-shirt and basically any other souvenir you can imagine. From art galleries to clothing stores, hats, and sunglass shops you'll find more than enough ways to spend your vacation allowance here.

Circuit Avenue also offers one of the island's only independent-owned grocery stores, Reliable Market, a beloved family-owned and operated store known for its deli counter and hearty meats. A bit further away from downtown, you'll find Tony's market, a small scale grocery store and the only market in town that sells beer and wine. In fact, Oak Bluffs is one of only two towns on Martha's Vineyard that sells alcohol. While Tony's sells beer and wine you can find a large selection of wine, beer, and liquor at Jim's Package Store, Our Market, and Vineyard Wine & Cheese Shop.

After an afternoon of shopping in Oak Bluffs you'll have worked up quite the appetite and the town delivers on variety among its dining options. Restaurants in Oak Bluffs offer something for everyone from pizza, to barbeque, to casual bites and fine dining. Along Oak Bluffs harbor you'll have your pick of casual waterfront establishments with seafood-heavy menus and open-air waterfront seating at Fishbones, the Sand Bar, Lobsterville, Coop de Ville, Nancy's, and nearby Lookout Tavern.

### Dining on Circuit Avenue and Kennebec Avenue

Circuit Avenue and Kennebec Avenue are also home to many more desirable dining establishments depending on your palette and preferred cuisine. For classic dishes that pack a lot of flavor check out Flavors MV. For more creative cuisine there's the Cardboard Box and the Sweet Life Cafe. Giordano's or “Gios” serves up Italian favorites in their dining room as well as popular pizza outpost and clam bar with all those quintessential New England seafood staples served hot and ready to go. If breakfast is your preferred meal to indulge in, Biscuits near the Oak Bluffs harbor serves up southern-inspired breakfast fare that never disappoints. There will likely be a wait for a table but it's always worth it.

### Restaurants

If you want to dine where the locals dine you can't miss Offshore Ale Company, the island's only brewpub that serves up award-winning beer with a smile. This beloved bar and tavern is known for its friendly service and reliable eats. After dinner must come sweets and there's no shortage of ice cream and candy shops to satisfy your sweet treat day or night. Whether it's Ben & Bill's, Carousel Ice Cream, or Mad Martha's, ice cream just tastes better in Oak Bluffs, and so do donuts. That's right, donuts. And not just by day but by night too. Oak Bluffs is home to the famous Back Door Donuts, a bakery serving up hot and flavorful donuts until the wee hours of the night. No trip to Oak Bluffs is complete without one of their heavenly apple fritters, you can thank us later.

Looking to keep the party going while you're in Oak Bluffs? You've come to the right town. Oak Bluffs is one of only two towns that offer late-night options. Bars along the Oak Bluffs harbor and Circuit Avenue are some of the busiest places on-island during those coveted summer nights.

For live entertainment head to the Loft above the Martha's Vineyard Chowder Company, which has also partnered with the Martha's Vineyard Concert Series to host a series of live performances in the summer months. The Ritz is the local watering hole and famed dive bar that can't be missed. Generally serving up live music nightly you're likely to find a party, and a packed dance floor, at the Ritz.

Outside of the downtown area but accessible via bike and the public bus is Noman's, a lively restaurant with a sprawling lawn for playing games, as well as an oversized patio that is often home to bands and special events. Vineyard Haven is the island's central location for coming and going, year round. It's where the Steamship Authority Ferry docks in, day in and day out, and is the town that welcomes most visitors to the island as the main port of entry. Once you dock, you arrive into the Vineyard Haven Harbor Cultural District, with a working harbor with New England charm, walkable village center, and so much to do.

The area was called “Nobnocket” by the Wampanoag people, and referred to by the colonial settlers as “Homes Hole”, which then evolved to “Holmes Hole”, named after the descendants of John Homes, who had settled in the area in the late 18th century.

## Getting to Vineyard Haven ~ Getting There

Since Vineyard Haven is the main port for the island year-round, the easiest and most common way to arrive at Vineyard Haven is via the [Steamship Authority Ferry](https://www.marthasvisit.com/ferries) that docks daily in the Vineyard Haven Harbor. You'll take the trip over from Woods Hole on Cape Cod - and in 45 minutes, you'll be docking in Vineyard Haven!

This is the only ferry that will also bring your car over to the island, so make sure to book your ferry tickets in advance if you are needing to bring a car on island. See the Steamship schedule below.

## Getting Around Vineyard Haven ~ Getting Around

Getting around Vineyard Haven is made easy with a few transportation options:

### By Car

These are for those travelers that choose to not bring their car on the island.

### By Bus

The most reliable mode of transportation from Vineyard Haven to the rest of the island is the VTA (Martha's Vineyard Regional Transit Authority), which has a main bus stop right on Vineyard Haven Harbor, making it easy to get on once you dock. Along with that bus stop, there are plenty of other bus stops and the VTA goes all over the island (all six towns, year-round), with extended schedules in the summertime.

The VTA's peak season of operation typically runs from May to October, with 14 routes that travel all over the island. New for 2022, you can now purchase digital travel bus passes for one day, three days, a full week, a full month, and/or a full year, making this a super easy way to get around the island seamlessly. ### Taxis and Ride Sharing

Other ways to get around Vineyard Haven are by using the local taxi companies, as well as Uber and Lyft. For those wanting to get some exercise in, renting a bicycle during your stay is a great way to get around town - you'll avoid having to find parking during the peak busy months!

As a cultural district, Vineyard Haven is a wealth of history. The center of it is the Martha's Vineyard Museum, where their permanent exhibitions showcase the history of the island.

Visitors are able to learn about the diverse history of Martha's Vineyard through the lenses of fishing, farming, changing, voyaging, creating, escaping, and belonging. ## The Beaches of Vineyard Haven, Martha's Vineyard ~ Beaches

As you know, Martha's Vineyard beaches are world-renowned, so the town of Vineyard Haven also is home to some fantastic and relaxing beaches.

**Owen Park Beach** is great for families because it is on the harbor and the ocean waves are barely there. It is a calm and protected beach to enjoy anytime of year.

Along those same lines, the **Tisbury Town Beach** is another favorite of ours.

One that's worth the bumpy ride is the **Lake Tashmoo Town Beach** - a lot like Menemsha Beach in terms of getting there, but once you get there, it is worth it! Just make sure to arrive early enough to be one of the lucky few, because parking is limited, but if you do score a spot, you'll be on a beach that is close to your car, perfect for any family needs!

### Shopping in Downtown Vineyard Haven

Vineyard Haven is a town with dozens of incredible shops, and you'll stop in and fall in love with all their wares. Because the downtown is such a walkable town, the shops are sprinkled all along main street as well as beyond, and cater to everyone's desires.

Start at the beginning of Main Street Vineyard Haven and browse along as you walk: general basic clothing shops that the locals love because they carry anything and everything, couture clothing shops by local designers, a well-stocked independent bookstore, sportswear clothing shops, culinary and kitchenware stores, fine jewelry shops, and much more.

### Groceries

If you're staying in town for longer than a few days, you'll need to stock up on groceries and Vineyard Haven is home to two of our favorite, locally-owned markets: [Vineyard Grocer](https://www.vineyardgrocer.com/) and [Cronigs Market](https://cronigsmarket.com/). They both are more focused towards wellness, with great fresh produce, hard-to-source specialty ingredients, and their staff is incredibly knowledgeable in all things food.

Vineyard Haven is a foodie's dream come true because it is home to dozens of restaurants that will feed not only your stomach, but your soul. In between sneaking into shops on Main Street, make sure to grab a coffee at [Mocha Mott's](https://www.mochamotts.com/) (their iced mochas are divine) or at [Behind the Bookstore](http://www.btbmv.com/).

Looking for a great dinner stop? Salvatore's and La Soffitta are great options if you love Italian, Garde East and Beach Road Restaurant are fabulous choices for the seafood lovers, and we can't forget our long-standing favorites like [Black Dog Tavern](https://www.theblackdog.com/pages/the-black-dog-tavern) and [Rocco's Pizza](http://marthasvineyardpizza.com/).

In this town you'll also find a few food trucks - the great thing is they are mostly stationary, so you won't have to chase them down! ### New Restaurants

New this year, Vineyard Haven is welcoming new locations such as Catboat Coffee, [Epicure MV](https://www.epicuremv.com/), and [MV Cheesery](https://www.mvcheesery.com/) all in one fun location, so imagine like a mini-version of traditional big-city food halls, right on your favorite island. Also, joining forces are The Swimming Pig and [North Tisbury Farm](https://www.northtisburyfarm.com/), taking over the space previously known as The Larder, where you'll be able to discover prepared foods, cheese, charcuterie, and a focus on cured meats made in house, by The Swimming Pig Chef, Tyler Potter.

## Events in Vineyard Haven ~ Events

Vineyard Haven has some incredible annual events that the community, both on and off island, look forward to every year. Here are the top three events you can't miss in Vineyard Haven:

- **Annual Memorial Day Town Picnic**: typically takes place at Tisbury Waterworks and is a community event where everyone brings food, games, and there's live music.
- **[Beach Road Weekend](https://www.beachroadweekend.com/lineup)**: a three-day live music festival that brings artists from around the US and the world to play music at the Veteran's Memorial Park in Vineyard Haven.
- **Street Fair**

Whatever you decide to eat, drink, explore, or discover, Vineyard Haven will truly be a treasure trove of activities. But if you're looking to not do anything and just peacefully stroll the streets of this town, you'll also be just as delighted. This town is home to some of the most incredible architecture and walking through neighborhoods like the one on Williams Street is sure to be a treat!



West Tisbury is centrally located in the middle of Martha’s Vineyard and offers a more agrarian landscape than the down-island towns of Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown. Many homes are built on larger lots, and businesses are a bit more spread out in this rural town. Driving through West Tisbury is where most visitors start to be in awe of the vast open space and bucolic landscapes prevalent on the island–it’s not all beaches and ice cream shops!

West Tisbury was first incorporated in 1892, though the first English settlers in this area can be recorded back to 1669. Historically this was an agricultural hub for the island, and the agricultural scene is still very much alive here. Today West Tisbury has a year-round population of approximately 3,500 residents, and offers a range of shopping, beaches, farms, restaurants, and activities.

## Where to Stay in West Tisbury ~ Places to Stay

West Tisbury does not have the same concentration of hotels that some of the down-island towns do, however there are still some great options for lodging in West Tisbury. [Lambert’s Cove Inn](https://lambertscoveinn.com/) offers a beautiful getaway, tucked away off of Lambert’s Cove Road, one of the island’s most picturesque streets, and a popular route for avid cyclists.

Lambert’s Cove Inn is walking distance from the coveted freshwater swimming hole, Icehouse Pond, and just over a mile away from Lambert’s Cove Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches around. The inn offers regular shuttle service to the shore, as well as a full-service restaurant, making this property sure to impress.

There are also many homes and guest houses available to rent through local real estate agencies, AirBnB, Vrbo, and more. West Tisbury is a great location to spend a vacation, close to the bustle of the down-island towns while giving you a feeling of being in the middle of nowhere.

West Tisbury offers a lot when it comes to shopping, from groceries to fine art.

### Groceries, Farms, and Local Produce

Cronig's Market, a full service grocery store with a deli, has their up-island location on State Road in West Tisbury. There are also multiple quaint roadside farm stands and markets including Blackwater Farm, [Whippoorwill Farm](https://www.whippoorwillfarm.com/), [Ghost Island Farm](https://ghostislandfarm.square.site/), and [North Tisbury Farm](https://www.northtisburyfarm.com/), which are ideal places to supplement the grocery store with local produce, meat, and eggs, and specialty items.

### The West Tisbury Farmer's Market

West Tisbury is also home to the popular [West Tisbury Farmers Market](https://www.wtfmarket.org/), hosted at the Agricultural Hall on Wednesdays and Saturdays from mid-June through October. This farmers market was originally founded in 1934, and has been continuously operating since 1974. This robust market offers locally raised produce, meat, flowers, fresh seafood, and more. With locally produced sea salt, cheeses, pastries, pizzas, fried chicken, coffee, and dozens of other locally made offerings, this farmers market has something for everyone.

If you need to accomplish a project while you are on the island, [E.C. Cottle](https://www.eccottle.com) is a full-service building supply and hardware store located on Lambert’s Cove Road, where you can get everything from windows and doors to gloves and adhesives.

### Alley's General Store

Don’t miss the chance to pop into [Alley’s General Store](https://vineyardtrust.org/property/alleys-general-store), a historic business started in 1858, now owned and operated by the Vineyard Preservation Trust. Alley’s is home to an eclectic mix of items including groceries, toys, coffee, and housewares, and even has its own set of Post Office boxes still used today.

Libraries aren’t always at the top of people's lists, but the West Tisbury Library has a lot to offer. If you have a library card, and you can sign up for one on the spot) this library offers much more than books. You can borrow everything from digital books on tape, to sewing machines, and instruments. This library also offers a wide variety of programming, from seminars to live music as well as countless family-friendly and children's programs. Don’t just save it for a rainy day!

West Tisbury is home to only a few restaurants but the town offers some seriously stand-out food.

### Alley's General Store and 7a

For excellent breakfast and lunch sandwiches head over to 7a Foods. Located next to Alley’s General Store this unassuming little shop makes exceptional food, using high-quality and locally sourced ingredients. Everything from the breakfast sausage to the pastrami is made in-house. Don’t miss their popular Liz Lemon sandwich, named after the 30 Rock character played by Tina Fey, and its recipe is Liz’ favorite dream sandwich including pastrami, turkey, swiss, cole slaw, Russian dressing, and potato chips on rye.

### State Road Restaurant

If you want to treat yourself to a memorable fine dining experience, check out State Road restaurant. This contemporary American restaurant’s grounds cultivate herbs, greens, and other ingredients used throughout their creative menu. With a focus on locally sourced ingredients, high-end service, and flawless execution, this restaurant has become a favorite among many locals, and even former presidents.

### Food at the Farmer's Market

If you plan on visiting the West Tisbury Farmers Market, there are a number of excellent prepared food options on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Stoney Hill Pizza is a mobile pizza oven that offers beautiful handmade neapolitan style pizzas, and impressive sweet and savory pastries.

Komorad Fried Chicken is the brainchild of Chicken Farmer Jefferson Munroe, the farmer/butcher at The Good Farm. This food truck offers excellent fried chicken and sandwiches.

Chilmark Coffee Roasters offers locally roasted free trade organic beans as well as their legendary cold brew and other coffee beverages. With other vendors offering spring rolls, bread, sandwiches, pastries, Kombucha, and even hand-made chocolates, this farmers market is not just about the veggies.

## Where to Get Alcohol and Cannabis in West Tisbury ~ Alcohol and Cannabis

Although you can purchase beer and wine at State Road Restaurant with your meal, there is no other alcohol available for sale at any stores in West Tisbury. You can venture just across the town line to MV Wine and Spirits at the Airport Business Park. You can also order beer, wine, liquor, and other items from several island package stores for delivery to your home or rental. Be prepared for a delivery fee on small orders, and be sure to get your order in early for same-day delivery.

The State of Massachusetts allows both medical and adult-use consumption of cannabis and cannabis products. Because the Island is separated from the rest of the state by the Atlantic Ocean, it is unlawful to carry cannabis between the mainland and the Island through this federal waterway. However, West Tisbury is home to [Fine Fettle](https://www.finefettle.com), a medical and adult-use cannabis dispensary. All of their products are grown, tested, and produced on-island.

## The Beaches of West Tisbury ~ Beaches

### Lambert's Cove Beach

If you make it to just one beach on Martha’s Vineyard, consider the legendary Lambert’s Cove Beach in West Tisbury. This coveted North Shore beach with crystal blue water, soft white sand, and famously calm water.

It is a town beach which means that it requires a beach pass during the season, both walk-on and parking passes are available for purchase for town residents. However the public and our four-legged friends are all welcome on Lambert’s Cove Beach before 10 am. If you bring your pup there is a large section of beach that is designated for well behaved off-leash dogs and it will likely be the highlight of your dog’s vacation.

### Long Point Wildlife Refuge Beach

Another gem in West Tisbury is Long Point Wildlife Refuge Beach, a vast secluded beach and nature preserve on the South Shore of the island. This property is managed by the Trustees, and is subject to their regulations. At some points in peak season reservations have been required, and the parking lot can reach capacity quite early.

If you do make it to Long Point, take a lovely walk from the parking lot, past a series of duck blinds, and Tisbury Great Pond to this quiet beach. You can also stroll down to the breach in the beach where the saltwater flows into the brackish pond, this area is known as Tisbury Great Pond Beach. With access to both the warm protected pond, and the ocean, there is plenty of opportunity for the whole family to enjoy.

## Hiking in West Tisbury ~ Hiking


### The Manuel F. Correllus State Forest

West Tisbury has a number of excellent trails to walk, hike, or bike. The massive Manuel F. Correllus State Forest is comprised of over 5,300 acres, part of which sits in West Tisbury. There’s an extensive network of paved bike/walking paths that travel throughout the island. Check the TrailsMV app for a full list of properties operated by Sheriff's Meadow, The Land Bank, and The Trustees.

### Walking Trails

Hikes in West Tisbury offer everything from long snaking trails past Seth’s Pond into former farmland and oak forest. Sandy beach hikes along Tisbury Great Pond at Long Point, and even wooded walks to the rocky shoreline at Cedar Tree Neck. New properties are added from time to time, so it is always worth checking the app if you have not been to the island for a while.

For an easy stroll through well-kept lush gardens head to Polly Hill Arboretum. This adored property is constantly expanding its exhibits and offers programming for the whole family.

## Getting Around West Tisbury ~ Getting Around

If you are driving in West Tisbury there are only a few roads that you need to know to get to most places. State Road is the main artery between Vineyard Haven and the up-island towns of Chilmark and Aquinnah. Edgartown West Tisbury Road, as it suggests, connects West Tisbury and Edgartown. Old County Road bisects State Road, and cuts a triangle between the two roads.

As you enter Chilmark you may split off of State Road onto North Road, Middle Road, or continue on to South Road, and their orientation is just as you’d imagine. Vineyard Transit Authority buses run regularly through the main roads in West Tisbury and are a convenient way to get around if you do not have a car.

West Tisbury is accessible for air travelers as it’s home to the Martha’s Vineyard Regional airport (MVY), the only airport on Martha’s Vineyard. Traveling by plane is the fastest way to get to Martha’s Vineyard and the views once you approach are simply majestic.

Given the seasonality of the island more flights are offered in the summer months, but depending on where you’re arriving from there are daily year-round flights available. [Cape Air](http://capeair.com/) offers daily, year-round flights from Boston and other major cities, plus additional seasonal service from New Bedford, Hyannis, and Nantucket in Massachusetts, as well as New York locations. **Major airlines including JetBlue, Delta, and American Airlines, offering seasonal service**. Another option for flying into the Vineyard year-round are private air charters.

The MVY airport is not located within walking distance to Martha’s Vineyard attractions, though there is a restaurant, seafood market, and liquor store nearby, but outside of those offerings, you’ll want to arrange for a car pick up or the bus to bring you to your ultimate destination.

Chilmark is a beauty of a town, home to seemingly endless rolling hills and rambling stone walls, as well as the rural fishing village of Menemsha. Chilmark is quiet and tranquil, but it boasts a storied history. Chilmark was the first of the up-island towns to split from the original two towns of Martha's Vineyard, Edgartown and Tisbury; Chilmark was incorporated in 1694.

Interestingly Chilmark once had one of the highest instances of deafness in the world. At one point in the 1800s, it was said that one in every 25 people in Chilmark was deaf. Martha's Vineyard Sign Language was developed in the early 18th century and was used in daily life by both deaf and hearing people alike until as recently as the 1950s. The language served as a precursor to what we know of as American Sign Language today.

Today Chilmark is home to just over 1,200 residents, and is known for its stunning views and rural landscape. Many Chilmark homes are tucked away out of sight on multi-acre properties. Think more sprawling rustic estate, less contemporary beach houses. While other parts of the island are places to show off, Chilmark is a place to hideout. Many celebrities have homes in Chilmark and enjoy the anonymity of its untouched landscape.

If you are looking to grab something to take to the beach, look no further than Chilmark General Store, from salads and sandwiches, to homemade pizza, you are sure to find something at this up-island institution. Enjoying a slice of pizza on their porch is a rite of passage during your Vineyard vacation. Look out for unassuming celebrities who might be doing the same.

### The Chilmark Tavern

Located next door to the Chilmark General Store is [Chilmark Tavern](https://www.chilmarktavern.com/), Chilmark's only full service restaurant. This local favorite is a BYOB establishment, however they are happy to mix you a cocktail with your own liquor, or provide a chilled glass for the beer you bring. This upscale eatery focuses on classic New England style dishes driven by local ingredients and inspiration.

### Menemsha - Chilmark's Iconic Fishing Village

Menemsha is home to two fish markets that offer a full selection of fresh seafood, as well as freshly prepared seafood favorites like lobster rolls, clam chowder, shucked oysters, and more. Many people venture down to these markets in the late evening and enjoy some fresh seafood while they watch the legendary sunset at nearby Menemsha Public Beach.

Shopping opportunities in Chilmark are more limited than the bustling Main Streets of our down-island towns but its outposts are unique and beloved. The Chilmark General Store is an institution in its own right, offering groceries, provisions, and basic necessities. You'll find the freshest seafood around at Larsen's Fish Market and Menemsha Fish Market with local catches coming into the dock located right behind them daily.

### Jewelry and Markets in Chilmark

Menemsha is also home to a handful of galleries and boutiques including the [Ruel Gallery](https://www.ruelgallery.com/), home to the work of painter Colin Ruel and his talented jewelry designer wife Nettie Kent. The Chilmark Flea offers high-quality handmade items from Vineyard artists and craftsmen, antiques, imports, and vintage finds, on display at this open-air market at the Chilmark Community Church every Wednesday and Saturday in the summer season.

### Local Produce and Farm Stands in Chilmark

For local produce and a quaint roadside farmstand experience head to [North Tabor Farm](https://www.northtaborfarm.com/), a small family farm that grows exquisite, nourishing food, much of what they grow as well as an expertly curated selection of beloved specialty items. There are also several other farm stands scattered throughout Chilmark, from rustic roadside honor boxes to high-end farm stands; so take the time to drive around and pop into these old-timey outposts. Chilmark is very rural and will require some driving time to get from place to place.

More than anything Chilmark is known for its scenic beauty, encompassing land and sea. When it comes to exploring the land we recommend taking a hike on the town's large network of trails. Chilmark's hiking trails range from the highest point on the Island, Peaked Hill, to stunning ocean views at Menemsha Hills, and Great Rock Bite. From Menemsha Hills, you can take a long wooded walk down to the Brickyard, the ruins of an 1860's water-powered brickworks that provided bricks to construction projects in New York, Boston, and Newport.

### Water Sports

If you're up for enjoying water sports, Chilmark's picturesque Quitsa Pond, Stonewall Pond, and Menemsha Harbor offer excellent places for stand-up paddleboarding, or kayaking. With protected clear water this is a great place to spend the day. ### Photography Buffs

No trip to Chilmark is complete without catching a legendary sunset at Menemsha Public Beach. We've mentioned this a few times, and for good reason. It is a mecca for photographers and sunset aficionados. Don't be surprised if the whole beach starts clapping after a spectacular show. JAWS aficionados will likely recognize their surroundings while exploring Menemsha harbor, which was the filming location for Quint's (Robert Shaw) shack, and the last resting place for his boat Orca.

### Cycling Chilmark

Avid cyclists will love the windy roads of Chilmark, though bikers beware there's limited shoulder area on Chilmark roads so ride with caution. We love to take the Bike Ferry from Menemsha to Lobsterville Beach in Aquinnah for more desirable cycling terrain. Bike miles of secluded road, or walk the secluded miles long Beach.

### Chilmark Road Race

If you're more into running than cycling, the [Chilmark Road Race](https://chilmarkcommunitycenter.org/chilmark-road-race-1), which has occurred since 1978, is a beautiful but oh-so-hilly course through Middle Road. Proceeds from the race are donated to the Town Affairs Council to assist in the operations of the Chilmark Community Center and make scholarships to year round residents possible.

### Fishing in Chilmark

If you're into fishing, or if you want to just give it a try, Chilmark is the place to do it. Charter boats will take you from Menemsha, as well as many other places on the Island, for a day out on the water. You can also bring a rod down to the fishing pier or Menemsha jetty and try your luck from shore. Menemsha Texaco carries a small selection of fishing supplies if you forget a lure or a sinker. For the more serious striped bass fisherman, Chilmark holds some legendary secret honey holes, but we can't spill those tips here.

This quaint library is more than it seems with regular programming for all ages, and with its connection to a much larger network, you can find more than books at this library.

## The Beaches of Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard ~ Beaches

### Menemsha Public Beach

Menemsha Public Beach is located in the heart of the Island's historic fishing village, Menemsha. This beach is the most iconic place on the island to watch the sunset. Famous for its unobstructed west-facing views, people of all ages flock to this place before the sun goes down (and many of them give it a round of applause!).

Just steps from shopping, and fish markets serving fresh fish, and cooked meals, this beach is a great place to spend the whole day. This is one of the few beaches on the island that has public restrooms in the parking lot. Easily accessible to all ages and abilities, a visit to Menemsha is a must. Parking is limited in Menemsha, and can fill up quite quickly.

### Lucy Vincent Beach

Some of Chilmark's most exceptional beaches are private, which means you cannot access them in the summer months without a town-issued beach pass, and this applies to Lucy Vincent Beach. If you are fortunate enough to be a town resident, or staying in a home with a beach pass, Lucy Vincent Beach is an iconic beach just past the Allen Farm on South Road.

Lucy Vincent is known for the dramatic sand and gravel formations that pepper its landscape, which has shifted dramatically over the years due to coastal erosion. Lucy Vincent Beach is a photographer's paradise and you'll find plenty of tripods set up at sunrise eager to catch the magic of the sky here in the early morning.

There is a section of Lucy Vincent beach that is famously clothing-optional. Legend has it that the namesake Ms. Vincent herself wanted certain standards maintained on her beach, and nudity was not up to her standards. Some believe that the tradition of disrobing on this beach harkens back to the freewheeling attitude of those that visited the beach before it was public.

### Squibnocket Beach

Squibnocket Beach is a Chilmark town beach located along the shore of Chilmark. This is a very popular place among surfers, and a legendary place for striped bass fishermen. Squibnocket Beach at high tide is limited to the space in front of the parking lot, though its reach expands when the tide falls, there are large rocks and cliffs on the up island side. Surrounded by private property and private beach access, this is the only access to this stretch of beach for miles.

Aquinnah is definitely a town that you need some kind of transportation to get to. For those looking for a challenge, it's a great bike ride to cautiously take from one of the down-island towns. But for 99% of the folks visiting Aquinnah, a vehicle with four wheels is what they arrive in.

First up, you can take the VTA Bus #5 from West Tisbury to Aquinnah. Secondly, you can easily drive your car to Aquinnah. And last but not least, you can book a tour van that will not only take you to Aquinnah but also give you a full guided tour of the town and its wonders. Heading to Aquinnah is considered “up-island”, so making sure to set some time aside as it is a little further - note these times are averages and will take longer if you are on the VTA bus, as they make stops along the way:

- Edgartown to Aquinnah: 33 minutes
- Oak Bluffs to Aquinnah: 34 minutes
- Vineyard Haven to Aquinnah: 31 minutes

Once you arrive in Aquinnah, you're going to want to spend an hour or two exploring the town. It's a small town, but soaking up the natural beauty, walking the trails, and checking out the native-owned businesses takes time and it's all so worth it!

You'll be able to walk around the Aquinnah Circle Cultural District, which has not only a few retail shops but also great food options. The Circle has some accessibility for wheelchairs, so you'll get to enjoy the views to the cliffs as well.

Other spots in Aquinnah are only reached by car (or if you have the time to walk or bike) and are gorgeous as well.

Spending a day in Aquinnah is such a great learning experience, and one that must not be missed when visiting Martha's Vineyard. We suggest as you drive up, a stop at the Orange Peel Bakery for coffee and a freshly baked good, and then head to the Aquinnah Circle Cultural District. Here, you'll discover the native-owned shops that make the circle such a special place. Shop local and support these businesses, while taking in the incredible cliffs.

### Outdoor Activities in Aquinnah

Aquinnah is also host to the **[Gay Head 10k](https://gayhead10k.com)**, which typically takes place in October annually. Beginning at the Gay Head Cliffs, the course heads down State Road past the Aquinnah Town Hall, the Aquinnah Public Library and Wampanoag Tribal lands, up Moshup Trail along the beaches and crashing surf, and back to the lighthouse for a visually interesting run that will challenge you.

For a day of exploring, you'll walk up towards the cliffs and the moment finally happens when you look up and see the Aquinnah Lighthouse majestically standing in a gorgeous setting of ocean, nature, and blue skies. Enjoy the view overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Noman's Land, and learn more about the Aquinnah Cliffs, then take a walk down to the Aquinnah Cultural Center.

The Aquinnah Cultural Center Inc. is an independent non-profit organization. Its purpose is to develop and maintain the Aquinnah Cultural Center that supports diverse tribal activities. We envision the cultural center to be a space that can support the ongoing exploration of Wampanoag culture. This vision is about creating a special place to express our beliefs and lifeways as living Wampanoag people as well as providing a place where visitors can learn about our cultural heritage.

## Beaches

### Moshup Beach

Aquinnah (formerly Gay Head) is the least populous town on the island. Home to the storied Aquinnah cliffs, and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). Moshup Beach (Gay Head Public Beach) is open to the public, and offers stunning views of the multicolored clay cliffs. If you do visit this incredible beach, remember that the cliffs are a federally protected landmark, climbing on or disturbing the clay is prohibited by law. Soft sand with large rocks, endless south facing views of the ocean, and the beautifully cliffs towering behind you create a truly majestic landscape on this beach. Parking is available in a large public lot for a daily fee. Facilities are available near the parking lot. The beach itself is about a ten minute walk down a dune path to the sand.

For those feeling the need to sun it all, head toward the cliffs and you will come upon a sign that is uncommon on many beaches in the U.S. “Beyond this point you may encounter nude sunbathing.” Beyond this sign, well, you guessed it, you may see folks sunbathing sans clothing.

### Philbin Beach

Philbin Beach is another beloved town beach in Aquinnah but it is only accessible to homeowners and renters in town. In 2012 the local government decided land ownership was not enough to earn a parking spot at this beautiful beach, after someone sold their home and retained a small non-buildable piece of land in order to maintain access to this beach. So you might say Martha's Vineyard is serious about its private beaches.

### Lobsterville Beach

On Aquinnah's North Shore you'll find Lobsterville Beach across the channel from Menemsha, and stretching for miles up to Dogfish Bar. This stretch of beach is very secluded. While there are sometimes closures on the beach to protect migratory bird nests, parking is extremely limited, and there will always be plenty of room to stretch your legs. Lobsterville Beach's West Basin can also be accessed by the bike taxi in Menemsha, this is a privately run service that runs from Menemsha, to West Basin boat launch. Once you are on Lobsterville Beach there are no facilities or amenities of any kind so plan accordingly.

All of the retail shops in the Aquinnah Circle are native-owned, of the tribe of the Wampanoag of Aquinnah, so shopping and supporting them is key to the island community.
